Fort York National Historic Site is located in the downtown core of Toronto on the northern bank of Lake Ontario. The fort was built to protect the city from attack and to provide a stable base for British military operations in Upper Canada. It also served as a prisoner-of-war camp during both the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. The fort was built between 1829 and 1853 by the British Army to defend against attacks by United States troops that had occupied Upper Canada. Fort York is one of the oldest defensive structures in North America still in use, though it has seen many modifications over its history. The fort was named for Frederick, Prince of Wales, the young son of King George IV, who had served as a Captain in the British Army and was being treated for tuberculosis here when he died of the disease in December 1832. Fort York National Historic Site is 14.5 hectares (37 acres) in size and is made up of a number of historic buildings and monuments. The fort is open year-round, but closed on statutory holidays and statutory holidays in January and February. Admission is free to the site, but some of the buildings are not accessible to visitors. The main building at Fort York is the Officers’ Quarters and Officers’ Mess, which was originally the Officers’ Residence or Officers’ Dwelling. It is open to the public. The Officers’ Mess was built in 1853 using stone from the ruins of Fort York. The Officers’ Mess is an excellent example of a military mess on the island of Canada during the 19th century, and is a National Historic Site of Canada.

The Officers’ Mess: This building is open to the public and houses an excellent collection of artifacts from the military life of the fort, including uniforms, bedding, food, military equipment and more. Dining Hall: This building is also open to the public, and is decorated for Christmas during the winter season. The Galleon: The Galleon is a replica of a 19th-century sailing ship that is used as a museum and event space. Officers’ Residence: This building is open to the public and houses exhibits about the officers and the daily life of the fort. Officers’ Quarters: These buildings are open to the public and form an excellent example of life at the fort in the early 19th century. Basement of Officers’ Quarters: This area is used for displays and events. Prison Barracks: This building is open to the public and houses displays about the prison life at the fort.
Activities at Fort York National Historic Site, The fort hosts a number of events throughout the year. The Canadian War Museum presents the Lower Canadian Fortifications exhibit from September until May. Fort York hosts music and cultural events throughout the year.
